Financial fraud is a growing problem. And you don’t even have to lose your card or checks for fraudulent charges to appear on your account.
Frequently checking your account online or through mobile banking is a good way to watch out for fraudulent charges. But there’s an even easier way you can find out if someone is fraudulently using your money: sign up for online banking alerts and the CardValet app (on your smartphone or tablet). They’re free, easy and a great way to monitor your finances.
With the Bell Bank mobile app and online banking, you can set up 3 types of alerts. You’ll find them under Alerts in the online banking menu, and you can be notified by text messaging, a phone call or an email.
To stay on top of your accounts without having to log in every day, set these alerts:
Account alert when your balance drops below a certain amount
This is a great alert to set to make sure you always have a minimum balance in your account. Do this for each of your accounts.
Transaction alert for debits of more than a certain amount
You can set a low amount on accounts you don’t often draw from, so you’re alerted each time there is a debit. If you use ChangeSaver and you don’t want alerts each time the program moves money from your checking account into your savings account, set the debit alert for your checking account a little higher.

If you receive a CardValet alert and something seems wrong, you can immediately turn your debit card off so it cannot be used. When you turn off your card, all transactions (except for recurring payments) will be denied until you turn your card back on.
You can set control preferences or alert preferences. If, for example, you want to prevent purchases from merchant types (such as entertainment), transaction types (like online purchases), or locations (such as international transactions), you can set CardValet to deny such purchases. If you want to allow those purchases, but receive an alert whenever they happen, you can set CardValet to do that, too.
